There is a widely held belief that sea baits are pretty much useless for specimen perch but this is very far from the truth, in fact they are the best bait for specimen perch that we have ever come across as long as you prepare them correctly.

The key is preparation, location and presentation. Get these aspects right and there are no other baits that come close ! What makes adapted sea baits so special is that they mainly attract perch in the specimen range at 4lb+. Occasionally we do catch smaller fish but it is the exception rather than the rule. We would love to give you the full details but our ISHA members would go ballistic at the very thought of making the information widely available, not least of all because of the unique physiology of the species and especially the swim bladder which can cause serious problems if large perch aren't handled with great care.

Specimen perch are far more common than most anglers would ever believe but because their behaviour differs from the smaller fish they are very rarely caught. Again, this is due to widely held misconceptions about specimen perch movements and hunting techniques. There is so much rubbish printed about lob worms, location and so on that it isn't surprising that very few big fish are caught. How can we be so sure ?Simple ....., results speak for themselves. We have to date caught over 50 fish in the 4lb+ class and 17 in the high 5lb range as well as two in excess of the current British record, documented and witnessed by other ISHA members. True it takes a while to get the baits ready and it has taken us many years to get it right, but the results are well worth the effort. The rig itself looks deceptively simple but involves four different knots which are essential to the presentation. When everything is right we can cast the whole lot up to 80yds without risk of bait damage or tangles and combined with the correct location the fish that come to the net can be quite remarkable !

To further add to the controversy and shouts of "never" from the established herd, around 75% of our best fish are caught at night. It is high time that the truth about specimen perch was told but of course there could be a high price to pay by the species themselves if inexperienced anglers were to get there hands on such special fish . Hence our compliance with the ISHA rules of disclosure.

All we can say is either join the association or have the courage to discard all you have learned about perch and try a new path. There are some amazing specimens out there ........................ Good luck.
