Updated Friday May 9th 2008 As we all know. Carp will eat almost anything. The quest for THE magic carp bait has become quite ludicrous with a massive range of astonishing flavours. A ‘good’ carp tackle shop, not eager to take your money of course, will provide a menu of carp baits that couldn’t be matched by the worlds leading chefs! From caviar and black pepper to a squids third leg from the left in hollandaise sauce with, of course, coffee and Ouzo ice-cream. ccarp baits, carp bait, carp baitsarp baits, carp bait, carp research, carp boilies. Frankly the whole thing has become completely ridiculous.
Carp bait producers are laughing all the way to the bank. The price of a kilo of ready made boilies is dearer than a good thick slice of prime steak. So okay, in heavily fished waters the Carp will become wary and eventually reject a bait that is constantly used. But ........ and I hate to say this....... we ARE talking fish here!
Carp are not super intelligent. They do not possess supernatural powers. They are not cunning or devious and I haven’t come across one yet that is capable of anything more than the occasional flap of its tail let alone reading the latest angling magazine to decide what to eat today. Alright alright, that’s a little harsh, but it is high time things were put into perspective.
Carp can be difficult to catch but this is primarily due to instinctive behaviour, not brain cells. General information on the species is completely inaccurate. Most of what you read is written by anglers and journalists that only spend about 15% of their time on the bank actually catching fish. When you think about it, that means that all their advice is actually based on an 85% failure rate!
As an experiment my daughter Kelly, aged ten at the time, was let loose in the kitchen to produce her own batch of boilies. The result is hard to describe, I guess weapons grade uranium would be close. Anyway, off we went to a local water and she promptly caught a small 12lb carp. What’s more, the venue concerned is far from easy. It is true that some baits work better than others but the key is presentation and location, not necessarily flavour. On occasions we have to empty lakes and you would be totally astonished at the numbers of boilies that litter the bottom, let alone particle baits! It is quite disgraceful the the amount of surplus bait that some anglers use in the misguided belief that the Carp will be more likely to accept an offering if there’s enough thrown in to feed half of Africa.
Complete and utter rubbish !
If a single bait is in the right place, presented well and is sufficiently appealing it will be taken. It really is as simple as that. In fact when we have to retrieve one of our specimen fish we do not even use free offerings, we use flavoured ice cubes as stringers. The flavouring spreads far better, turning to liquid as it melts , and leaves a concentrated imprint where it landed. At least when the Carp turns up there is only one bait available.... ours!
